IAEA ELECTS BOARD OF GOVERNORS

19971002 VIENNA, 2 October (IAEA) -- The forty-first regular session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has elected 11 member States to the IAEA Board of Governors, the 35-member policy- making body.

The 11 member States newly elected to the Board are: Ghana, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Republic of Korea, Slovenia, Sweden, and Viet Nam.

The other 24 member States of the Board, which have either been designated by the Board of Governors or elected by the General Conference, are: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Cuba, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Russian Federation, South Africa, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and the United States.

The newly-constituted Board will convene on 6 October, following the conclusion of the General Conference, to elect the Board Chairman and Vice- Chairmen for the period 1997-1998.
