SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES CONCERN OVER SITUATION IN NORTHERN IRAQ URGES TURKEY TO WITHDRAW TROOPS

The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for the Secretary-General:

Secretary-General Kofi Annan is following the situation in northern Iraq with growing concern. As he has made clear in the past, Iraqi sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected. He, therefore, urges Turkey to withdraw its troops as soon as possible.
