GOVERNING COUNCIL OF UNITED NATIONS COMPENSATION COMMISSION TO MEET IN GENEVA, 29 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER

19970926 GENEVA, 25 September (UN Information Service) -- The Governing Council of the United Nations Compensation Commission will hold its twenty-fifth session in Geneva from 29 September to 1 October 1997, under the presidency of Ambassador Gonçalo de Santa Clara Gomes of Portugal.

The Council is expected to examine the report and recommendations of the Panel of Commissioners concerning claims made by Egyptian workers. The Government of Egypt filed a consolidated, category "C" claim on behalf of more than 800,000 Egyptian workers seeking compensation for funds they had deposited in Iraqi banks, for transfer to beneficiaries in Egypt. The Egyptian claim consolidated 1.24 million individual claims and has a total asserted value of $491 million.

During its current session, the Council is expected to continue reviewing reports submitted by governments and international organizations on the distribution of payments with respect to their claims, as well as to consider a range of issues relating to the processing and distribution of claim payments.

The Council will also examine a report from Executive Secretary, Jean-Claude Aimé on the activities of the United Nations Compensation Committee between June and August 1997, as well as two working papers prepared by the Secretariat. One working paper presents the work programme of the Commission, with a view of expediting its work. The second details the process of selection of commissioners.
