NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS 'PILGRIMAGE FOR PEACE', MEMOIR OF FORMER SECRETARY-GENERAL PEREZ DE CUELLAR,

19970919 TO BE LAUNCHED AT HEADQUARTERS, 22 SEPTEMBER

A personal account by former United Nations Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar of his 10 years as head of the Organization -- Pilgrimage for Peace -- will be launched on Monday, 22 September, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Visitors Lobby. The event is being sponsored by the Sales and Marketing Section of the Department of Public Information (DPI).

Pilgrimage for Peace is a reflection of events with which the United Nations was concerned during Mr. Pérez de Cuéllar's term in office -- from 1982 to 1991. In the book, the former Secretary-General reflects, among other things, on the role the United Nations played in the resolution of conflict around the globe and its resistance to aggression.

The "pilgrimage road" traversed in Mr. Pérez de Cuéllar's 10 years as Secretary-General is revealed to be a road scarred by battles, famine and inhumanity yet made safer by an increasing commonality of interest in global security, the end of the cold war and the strengthening of freedom and respect for human rights. Pilgrimage for Peace is the story of the man who walked that road to secure a more peaceful world.
