NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS

19970918 TO VISIT UN HEADQUARTERS

The newly appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson, will visit United Nations Headquarters in New York for two weeks, from Monday, 22 September, to Friday, 3 October.

During her visit she will meet with the Secretary-General and other senior United Nations officials as well as a number of high-level government officials including Presidents, Prime Ministers and Foreign Ministers attending the General Assembly's general debate.

The United States Secretary of State and former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Madeleine Albright, will host two receptions for the High Commissioner, including one to meet women Ambassadors and heads of United Nations bodies.

Mrs. Robinson will also meet with the first High Commissioner for Human Rights, Jose Ayala-Lasso, who resigned the position in March this year to become the Foreign Minister of Ecuador.

On Tuesday, 30 September, the High Commissioner will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. in room 226. On Wednesday, 1 October, she will meet with non-governmental organization representatives at noon in the Economic and Social Council Chamber.

Mrs. Robinson assumed her duties as the High Commissioner for Human Rights on 12 September, having stepped down as President of Ireland that same day. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, which also includes the office formerly called the Centre for Human Rights, is based in Geneva.
