ASSEMBLY ELECTS SOUTH AFRICA TO REPLACE ZIMBABWE AS VICE-PRESIDENT
19970917 In a brief meeting this afternoon, the General Assembly elected South Africa as a Vice-President for the fifty-second session, replacing Zimbabwe, who was elected yesterday Vice-President as well as Chairman of the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization).The change was made on the basis of rule 38 of the Assembly's Rules of Procedure which states that "no two members of the General Committee shall be members of the same delegations". The General Committee, which comprises the Assembly President, the 21 Vice-Presidents and the Chairmen of the Main Committees was therefore not properly constituted.
The 21 Vice-Presidents of the current session are China, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Guinea, Ireland, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Mongolia, Panama, Qatar, Russian Federation, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, South Africa, Togo, United Kingdom, United States and Viet Nam.
The General Assembly will meet again at a date to be announced.
