NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF TUNISIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19970911 Biographical NoteAli Hachani, the new Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
In the two years prior to his current appointment, Mr. Hachani held three successive posts in Tunisia's Foreign Ministry. He was Director for Research Analysis and Planning, Director for Relations with Members of the European Union, and then Director-General for Europe. From 1992 to 1995, he served as Ambassador to Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal, with residence in Dakar.
After entering the Foreign Ministry in 1968, Mr. Hachani served from 1972 to 1979 as Counsellor at Tunisia's Mission to the United Nations in New York, where he participated in a number of General Assembly sessions, as well as technical committees and international conferences. Upon his return to Tunis, he served for six months in the Prime Minister's Office.
Subsequently, Mr. Hachani was appointed Deputy Director for Multilateral Cooperation in the Foreign Ministry, where he went on to become Director of Multilateral Cooperation and Cooperation among Developing Countries. From 1985 to 1990, he was Tunisia's Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, after which he was appointed Director of Bilateral and Regional Cooperation with Arab, African and Asian Countries in the Foreign Ministry.
Mr. Hachani graduated from Tunis University in 1968, where he studied English language and literature. From 1969 to 1970, he also attended a training programme in international relations for diplomats at Columbia University, New York.
Born on 19 September 1946, Mr. Hachani is married and has four children.
