DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD LIBRARY ANNOUNCES EXPANDED TRAINING PROGRAMME WITH EMPHASIS ON ELECTRONIC INFORMATION RESOURCES

19970828 The Dag Hammarskjöld Library of the Department of Public Information (DPI) has just announced its 1997 fall training programme. The revised and expanded programme of training seminars and workshops has a strong emphasis on electronic information resources, including the Internet, and is open to delegates and staff of permanent missions and of the Secretariat.

While many courses are being offered on an ongoing basis, a special programme will take place from 9 September through 14 October. The courses are: Basics of United Nations Documentation; Using the Indexes to Proceedings; Introduction to Researching the United Nations and Its Documentation; and United Nations Human Rights Bodies: Mandates, Organization of Work, Documentation.

The Library will also offer advisory services on an ongoing basis for documents officers who request assistance in organizing and managing a documents collection, as well as in creating and maintaining electronic reference files.

With an emphasis on basic, advanced and subject-focused Internet training, the following sessions are also available: CyberSeek: a basic course in Internet information retrieval; CyberSpecials: subject-oriented courses in Internet searching; United Nations Web Search: advanced searching on United Nations system sites on the Internet; and International news- gathering workshops with a region-specific focus.

Participants are taught the best sources and most effective search strategies for independent and/or librarian-assisted retrieval of data. The 1997 fall training programme also includes sessions on desktop delivery services and an introduction to the Library's databases on the Intranet.
