SECRETARY-GENERAL DISTURBED AT REPORTS OF RENEWED HOSTILITIES IN SOUTHERN LEBANON

19970818 The following statement was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary- General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General is disturbed at reports of renewed hostilities in southern Lebanon. He is particularly concerned at the targeting of civilians, notably the killing of two youths by a roadside bomb in Kfar Houne and the subsequent shelling of the town of Sidon, with six reported killed and many more injured. The United Nations has been in touch with both sides and urged them to do their utmost to prevent a further deterioration of the situation and, in particular, to refrain from targeting civilians.
