SECRETARY-GENERAL EXTENDS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILIES OF VICTIMS OF UNIFIL HELICOPTER CRASH IN LEBANON

19970807 The following statement was issued yesterday by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

A helicopter of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) crashed during a night training flight near the village of At Tiri in south Lebanon at 9:17 p.m. local time, killing all five on board. Four of them were Italian peace-keepers and one Irish. The UNIFIL is investigating the cause of the crash. The families of the victims are being notified. The Secretary- General has informed the Security Council of this incident. He wishes to extend his deep condolences to the families of the victims.
