NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BRUNEI DARUSSALAM PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19970806 Biographical NotePengiran Maidin Hashim, the new Permanent Representative of Brunei Darussalam to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan. Mr Hashim has been his country's Ambassador to Germany since September 1994, also serving as non-resident Ambassador to the Russian Federation since September 1996.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Hashim was Private Secretary to his country's Foreign Minister (August 1992-September 1994). Within the Foreign Ministry, he has served in the following posts: Director of the Political Department (1990-1992), Director-General of the department on the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) (1986-1989); Acting Director of the Administration Department (1985-1986); Deputy Director of the Economic Department (1984-1985); and Administrative Officer Special Grade (1982-1984).
Beginning his career in 1976 as Administrative Officer in the Government's Economic Planning Unit, Mr. Hashim became Assistant District Officer for the country's Tutong District in 1977. In 1982, he became Deputy Controller in the Royal Customs and Excise Department, where he had been serving as Acting Deputy Controller since 1979.
Mr. Hashim holds a Master of Arts degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University (1990) in the United States. Studying in the United Kingdom, he earned a Certificate in Diplomacy from Oxford University (1984) and a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from Hull University (1976).
Born on 13 March 1951, Mr. Hashim is married and has five children.
