SECRETARY-GENERAL RECEIVES 7,700,000 YEN FOR UNICEF COLLECTED BY STUDENTS OF YOKOHAMA

19970805 The Secretary-General met today at United Nations Headquarters with three high school students from Yokohama, Japan. The three "Peace Messengers" were delegated by the Yokohama Student International Peace Festival to present the Secretary-General with a check for 7,700,000 yen collected by the Yokohama students for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). They also told him of their and their friends' and classmates' strong desire to contribute to world peace.

The Secretary-General thanked the students and the city of Yokohama for this very generous donation, and for their interest in the work of the United Nations. He remarked that their determination to build a culture of peace and their understanding of the interdependent nature of our world should serve as a model for young people all over the world. He also told them of his conviction that the older generations should strive to ensure that younger ones inherited a peaceful and environmentally sound planet.
