NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF INDIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19970804 Biographical Note

Kamalesh Sharma, the new Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Mr. Sharma has been Additional Secretary with the Government of India since March 1995. Prior to that, he served as India's Ambassador to Kazakhstan (1992-1995) and to Germany (1990-1992). From 1988 to 1990, he was India's Permanent Representative at Geneva.

Mr. Sharma began his career with India's Foreign Service in 1965, and was subsequently posted to Bonn (1967-1970), Hong Kong (1970-1973), New Delhi (1973-1975), Ankara (1975-1978), Jeddah (1978-1981) and Bonn (1981-1984). He also served as Joint Secretary with the Indian Government from 1985 to 1988.

Born on 30 September 1941, Mr. Sharma is married and has two children.
