IRAQ SANCTIONS COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF NEW ENTRY SITE FOR HUMANITARIAN GOODS, AT IRAQI/SYRIAN BORDER

19970731 The following was issued today by the Security Council Committee established by resolution 661 (1990) (the Iraq Sanctions Committee):

As requested by the Government of Iraq and pursuant to paragraph 26 of the Memorandum of Understanding signed on 20 May 1996 between the Secretariat of the United Nations and the Government of Iraq, the Secretary-General of the United Nation has approved the designation of Al-Walid at the Iraqi/Syrian border (facing Al-Tenf of Syria) as a new entry point for the supply of humanitarian goods to Iraq under resolution 986 (1995). The other entry points at present are the Iraqi port of Umm Qasr, Trebil at the Iraqi/Jordanian border and Zakho at the Iraqi/Turkish border.

A team of United Nations independent inspection agents will be stationed at the newly designated point to authenticate the arrival of humanitarian supplies to Iraq in accordance with paragraph 36 of the Committee's procedures for the implementation of resolution 986 (1995).
