SECRETARY-GENERAL APPOINTS LAKHDAR BRAHIMI AS SPECIAL ENVOY TO ASSESS PEACEMAKING ACTIVITIES IN AFGHANISTAN
19970729 The Secretary-General has decided to appoint Lakhdar Brahimi as his Special Envoy to undertake a short-term mission in order to assess the United Nations peacemaking activities in Afghanistan and to consult interested and relevant countries and parties and the Organization of the Islamic Conference on their positions regarding these activities. He will submit his findings to the Secretary-General in time for these to serve as one basis for the Secretary-General's report to the fifty-second session of the General AssemblyMr. Brahimi has arrived in New York for consultations before the trip. Mr. Brahimi's mandate is to be distinguished from that of the United Nations Special Mission to Afghanistan, as defined by resolutions of the General Assembly. The Special Envoy's consultations are to be time-limited and are intended for the purpose of advising the Secretary-General regarding all aspects of United Nations activities relative to its peacemaking efforts.
