SECRETARY-GENERAL WELCOMES NEWS OF ARRESTS IN KENYA

19970718 The Secretary-General welcomes the news of the arrests in Kenya. They demonstrate the determination of the international community to bring to justice those accused of perpetrating some of the worst crimes known to mankind. The Secretary-General reiterates that justice and peace are indivisible, and that without justice, healing cannot begin. He is gratified that this process is well under way.

The Secretary-General extends his congratulations to those involved in today's action, and his thanks to the Government of Kenya for their indispensable cooperation. He hopes it will not be long before others indicted by the International Tribunals for Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia are also brought to justice.
