PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BURUNDI PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19970717 Biographical NoteGamaliel Ndaruzaniye, the new Permanent Representative of Burundi to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Ndaruzaniye served from 1993 to 1996 as the Technical Adviser to Burundi's Minister of Education, Basic Instruction and Adult Literacy. From 1992 to 1993, he was Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. He served as Minister of Education from 1988 to 1992, and as Minister of Labour and Vocational Training from 1987 to 1988.
Mr. Ndaruzaniye began his career as Deputy Director for Extracurricular Education in the Ministry of Education (1978-1980). He was Professor of Adult Education at the University of Burundi (1982-1984), Professor of National Politics at the School of Journalism in Burundi (1985-1987), and Professor of Adult Education at the University of Butare in Rwanda (1986).
During that period, Mr. Ndaruzaniye was also National Secretary of the Party of the Union for National Progress (UPRONA) (1981-1987), as well as Executive Secretary of the Rwagasore Revolutionary Youth (1980-1981).
Among his other positions, Mr. Ndaruzaniye was a member of Burundi's National Commission on Information (1979-1980) and of its National Commission studying the issue of national unity (1988-1989); Chairman of the Conference of Ministers of Education of Countries that Use French as a Common Language (1989-1990); member of Burundi's Constitutional Commission (1991-1992); as well as Burundi's Permanent Observer at the Arusha negotiations on the Rwandan conflict (1992-1993).
Mr. Ndaruzaniye was educated at the University of Burundi, where he received a Master's degree in educational sciences in 1978 and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1976. He also possesses a diploma in teaching for the primary level of education and a certificate in secondary education, both obtained in 1973 from Gitega Teacher Training College.
Born on 19 July 1952, in Bugendana, Burundi, Mr. Ndaruzaniye is married and has six children.
