SECRETARY-GENERAL'S REFORM ANNOUNCEMENT TO BE WEBCAST ON INTERNET

19970711 The statement of Secretary-General Kofi Annan to the General Assembly, in which he will launch "track two" of his reform proposals for the United Nations, will be webcast live from the Organization's Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, 16 July.

The Department of Public Information (DPI) has finalized arrangements to begin the live webcast of the statement at 10 a.m., to be followed by a press conference by the Secretary-General. The live webcast has been made possible at no cost to the United Nations by a special arrangement with the Internet Broadcast Centre, a leading Internet broadcast service provider. Visitors to the United Nations website may view the webcast through the United Nations Reform, Audio-Visual Services or General Assembly areas at http://www.un.org/av and http://www.un.org/reform.

In addition, DPI will unveil the updated United Nations Reform Page, which will instantly make the full text of the entire report available all over the world via the United Nations Home Page. The updated United Nations Reform Page will also feature related documents.

The United Nations website, which carries major United Nations documents, news, press releases, a wide range of databases and information on all aspects of the work of the Organization, receives almost 3 million hits a month and is coordinated and maintained by DPI with the technical support of the Office of Conference and Support Services.

The recent special session of the General Assembly to review implementation of Agenda 21 (23-27 June) was also webcast live by arrangements with the Internet Broadcast Centre and was very widely received. Over 2,000 "websurfers" viewed the statements during that week. Those statements, as well as the Secretary-General's forthcoming statement and press conference, will remain archived for one month. This site (http://www.internetbroadcast.com/un.htm) also carries live and archived daily United Nations press briefings as well as United Nations radio on-line.
