NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CZECH REPUBLIC, VLADIMIR GALUSKA, TO LEAD SUBSTANTIVE SESSION OF ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COUNCIL

19970623 The Economic and Social Council will convene its 1997 substantive session in Geneva on 30 June with Vladimir Galuska (Czech Republic) as its new President. He was elected on 2 May to complete the unexpired term of office of Karel Kovanda, also of the Czech Republic, who resigned because of his new responsibilities in his Government.

Mr. Galuska, the new Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations, presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan on 24 April.

Prior to his appointment, from June 1994 to March 1997, Mr. Galuska served as Director of the Personnel Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague. From 1993 to 1994, he was the Deputy Chief of the Mission of the Czech Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Acting Permanent Representative of the Czech Republic to the United Nations from January to June 1993.

From July 1991 to December 1992, he was Political Counsellor of the Embassy of Czechoslovakia in Washington, D.C., after having served from June 1990 to June 1991 as Consul.

Mr. Galuska headed the Legal Department of the Skoda Praha from 1985 to 1990, and for 10 years, from 1975 to 1985, he was Legal Counsel to the Skoda Praha Enterprise.

Mr. Galuska received his Juris Doctor degree from Charles University in Prague in 1981, and in the same year, completed a postgraduate course on commercial and administrative law. From 1970 to 1975, he served on the Law Faculty of the University.

Born on 2 October 1952, Mr. Galuska is married and has two sons.
