NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS MULTI-MEDIA POPULATION EXHIBIT TO OPEN AT HEADQUARTERS

19970619

"Population and Our World", an interactive multi-media exhibit produced by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), opened at Headquarters today in the Neck Area of the First Basement.

The exhibit consists of five modules, each made up of panels with backlit photographs, interactive games and displays with moving parts. Viewers are able to make hypothetical choices regarding, for instance, population size and to see what environmental impact they could have. The exhibit will remain on view until 2 July.

The opening of the exhibit was timed to coincide with the nineteenth special session of the General Assembly to review and appraise the implementation of Agenda 21, the programme of action adopted by the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED).

Also on the occasion of the special session, UNFPA is issuing three new publications: "Population in the 21st Century: UNFPA and Agenda 21"; "Population and Sustainable Development: Five Years after Rio"; and "Environment for People: Building Bridges for Sustainable Development". Copies are available at the exhibit.

In addition, the UNFPA has produced a 10-minute video news release containing statements on environmental and population issues by prominent leaders, as well as footage on the subject, including some video coverage of UNCED. Copies are available to television broadcast media.
