NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF BAHAMAS PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19970613 Biographical NoteMaurice Elijah Moore, the new Permanent Representative of Bahamas to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Before retiring from active politics, Mr. Moore was appointed earlier this year as Minister of Social Development. Prior to that, he had served since 1994 as Minister of Labour, Human Resources and Training.
Mr. Moore began his political career in 1969, when he was elected to Parliament for Grand Bahama as a member of the Progressive Liberal Party. He became a founding member of the Free National Movement in 1970, and was elected to Parliament in 1977 on that party's platform and from the High Rock constituency. He was re-elected in that capacity in 1982 and again in 1992.
In addition to his political activities, Mr. Moore served as an electronics engineer and technician for four years, and was owner/director of National Rent-A-Car in the Bahamas. He also served as President of Amalgamated Building Construction and Engineering Trade Union in Grand Bahama.
Mr. Moore was educated at Eight Mile Rock Public School, Grand Bahama, and St. Augustine's College, Nassau. He also studied at the RCA Institute in New York.
Mr. Moore is married and has five children.
