NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SURINAME PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19970613 Biographical NoteSubhas Chandra Mungra, the new Permanent Representative of Suriname to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
A former Minister for Foreign Affairs (September 1991-September 1996), Mr. Mungra was, before assuming his current post, a Member of the Financial and Monetary Committee of the President of Suriname. From January to May 1997 he was Senior Policy Adviser at the Ministry of Finance of Suriname, where he held the post of Minister for Finance from 1986 to 1990.
He was Chairman of the Joint Governing Board of the Centre for the Development of Industry on behalf of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group in Brussels under the Lome III Convention (1988-1990). Prior to that, from April 1986, he was Vice-Chairman of the Board.
Between 1981 and 1986, Mr. Mungra held a number of positions such as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Cardboard Industry (1985- 1986) and Director of the National Development Bank (1983). He was Chairman of the Bank's Board from 1981 to 1982. He was appointed Head of the Department of Economic Affairs of the Ministry of Finance in March 1980, rising to become Acting Director of the Ministry from 1980 to 1981. He also taught at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname as Lecturer in Monetary Theory (1985-1986), Lecturer in Finance and Banking (1979-1986) and Lecturer in Public Finances (1976-1985).
Mr. Mungra was educated at the Municipal University of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, where he received a Master's degree in Economics. He has published a number of magazine articles on economic issues, including one on Suriname and the International Monetary Fund.
Born in Paramaribo, on 2 September 1945, Mr. Mungra is married and has three children.
