UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY FORUM ON 'WATER FOR URBAN AREAS' TO BE HELD AT TOKYO ON 25 JUNE
19970603 NEW YORK, 3 June (UNU) -- The United Nations University will hold its Sixth Global Environmental Forum on Wednesday, 25 June, on the topic, "Water for Urban Areas in the Twenty-first Century". The Forum will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the International Conference Hall at UNU headquarters in Tokyo. In addressing the question of water management in large urban centres, the Forum will focus on the present situation and future trends, with respect both to the quantity and quality of freshwater resources. The discussions are intended to promote critical consideration of a number of technological and policy options for dealing with water problems brought on by rapid urbanization and mega-city growth, particularly in developing countries.
The UNU Global Environmental Forum, which is sponsored by the Obayashi Corporation, began in 1991 as an annual international event, bringing together leading researchers and experts from all continents to debate specific issues relating to global environmental change.
At its previous sessions, the Forum considered the following themes: Monitoring and Action for the Earth; Environmental Change in Rain Forests and Drylands; Will Tropical Forests Change in a Global Greenhouse?; Population, Land Management and Environmental Change; and Freshwater Resources and Arid Lands.
The UNU Global Environmental Forum is open to the public and admission is free. Simultaneous interpretation between English and Japanese will be provided.
