DAG HAMMARSKJÖLD LIBRARY HOLDS WORKSHOP ON USE AND MANAGEMENT OF UN DOCUMENTATION FOR UNITED NATIONS DEPOSITORY LIBRARIES

19970602 The Dag Hammarskjöld Library of the Department of Public Information (DPI) began today a workshop on the use and management of United Nations documentation for the Organization's depository libraries.

The workshop, which will conclude on 6 June, is being attended by about 15 librarians in charge of depository libraries in Canada, Israel, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.

The aim of the workshop is to enhance traditional documents research skills by giving hands-on training with the latest electronic research tools developed by the Organization. It includes a programme of lectures and demonstrations on access to United Nations documentation, the use of United Nations documents reference sources, including the United Nations Bibliographic Information System (UNBIS), the Optical Disk System (ODS), and instructions on how to access United Nations documentation on the World Wide Web.

The participants are also being briefed on recent developments in information technology and their potential for improving communication between the Organization and depository libraries.
