On Wednesday, 9 April 1997, the United Nations will host the opening session of the 1997 Conference of the National High School Model United Nations in the General Assembly Hall from 7 p.m until 9 p.m. The introductory address will be delivered by the Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Alvaro de Soto, with the keynote speech delivered by the Permanent Representative of Syria, Mikhail Wehbe. More than 2,250 participants will attend this year's Conference from high schools across the United States, as well as Canada, Colombia, Germany and Mexico.

Before returning to the United Nations for closing plenary sessions on Saturday, 12 April, the students meet in simulations of 23 United Nations bodies in sessions held at the New York Hilton. The goal of the Conference, which is run by a staff of more than 70 college students from North America, is to educate high school students in issues of foreign relations, diplomacy and global concerns.
