DAG HAMMARSKJOLD LIBRARY LAUNCHES NEW TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR DEPOSITORY LIBRARIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

19970320 A seminar on the Enhancement of the Use of United Nations Documentation, organized by the Dag Hammarskjold Library, Department of Public Information, will be held from 24 to 27 March for depository libraries in Eastern Asia and the Pacific. The seminar will take place at the headquarters of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in Bangkok, Thailand.

The seminar will be attended by more than 30 librarians in charge of United Nations deposit collections in Brunei Darussalam, China, Fiji, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa and Thailand.

The aim of the seminar is to enhance traditional document research skills by giving hands-on training with the latest electronic research tools developed by the Organization. It will include a programme of lectures and demonstrations on access to United Nations documentation, the use of United Nations documents reference sources including the United Nations Bibliographic Information System (UNBIS), the Optical Disk System (ODS) and instructions on how to access United Nations documentation on the World Wide Web. In a recent survey of depository libraries, the need for training and guidance was strongly expressed.

The seminar is the first of a training programme for depository libraries and was made possible thanks to a grant from the Japanese Trust Fund for International Cooperation and an additional donation from the University of Brunei Darussalam. The Dag Hammarskjöld Library hopes to conduct this training programme in other regions with the assistance of voluntary contributions.
