UNITED NATIONS UNIVERSITY TO HOLD TWO MEETINGS ON INTEGRATED GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT 10-14 MARCH

19970311 NEW YORK, 10 March (UNU) -- The United Nations University (UNU)'s Institute of Advance Studies will hold two environmental meetings on integrated assessment modeling, from 10 to 14 March 1997 at United Nations University headquarters in Tokyo.

The first meeting is the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Asia- Pacific Workshop on Integrated Assessment Models, which will be held from 10 to 12 March. This meeting has three objectives. First, 140 top scholars from around the world will exchange their latest integrated assessment modeling research results on climate change. Second, the meeting will provide developing countries with the latest scientific and technical information on climate change issues. Third, it will give policy makers an in-depth analysis of climate change concerns as they prepare for December's Third Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention in Kyoto, Japan.

The second meeting is the Tokyo Modeling Forum on Integrated Global Environmental Assessment, to be held from 13 to 14 March. That meeting also has three objectives: to compare how different integrated assessment models stabilize CO2 emissions and effect climate change; to expand the use of integrated assessment models to developing countries; and to extend integrated assessment models' climate change framework to include more sustainable development-related issues.

Integrated assessment models are computer simulation models which evaluate the effects of human activities on the environment. The results can be used to communicate clearly environmental information between scientists and policy makers. However, some scientists are concerned about their applicability to developing countries. Both of the meetings will provide developing countries with opportunities for integrating their perspectives into the models.
