SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES HOPE FOR MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE BETWEEN INDIA AND PAKISTAN

19970310 The following was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Kofi Annan:

The Secretary-General warmly welcomes the agreement reached by India and Pakistan to hold a meeting of their Foreign Secretaries in New Delhi from 28 to 31 March. He commends the willingness expressed recently by the two Prime Ministers to improve bilateral relations, and hopes that the New Delhi talks will pave the way for a meaningful dialogue aimed at resolving all outstanding issues between the two countries.
