AD HOC COMMITTEE ON TERRORIST BOMBINGS ELECTS THIRD VICE-CHAIRMAN, ELECTION OF RAPPORTEUR POSTPONED
19970224 The Ad Hoc Committee on the elaboration of a convention on the suppression of terrorist bombings this afternoon elected Rohan Perera (Sri Lanka) as its third Vice-Chairman. He will join a bureau, elected this morning, as the Committee began its first session, that includes Philip Kirsch (Canada) as Chairman, and Carlos Fernando Díaz (Costa Rica) and Samia Ladgham (Tunisia) as Vice-Chairmen. The election of the Rapporteur was again postponed.Following the election of the third Vice-Chairman, the Committee reverted into a working group of the whole to continue a process which began this morning: deliberations on a draft international convention for suppressing terrorist bombings, submitted by France on behalf of the "Group of Seven" major industrialized countries and the Russian Federation.
Established by resolution 51/210, of 17 December 1996, the Committee -- which is open to all Member States of the United Nations, the specialized agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) -- was also mandated to address means of further developing a comprehensive legal framework of conventions dealing with international terrorism.
The Ad Hoc Committee's next meeting will be announced.
