NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF CROATIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19970218 Biographical NoteIvan Simonovic, the new Permanent Representative of Croatia to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Before his new appointment, Mr. Simonovic served as Croatia's Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs from March 1996. Previously, he was Croatia's First Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs (1995) and Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs (1992 and 1994). He spent the 1993-1994 academic year at Yale University Law School on a Fulbright Scholarship.
Mr. Simonovic participated and continues to participate in many Croatian Government commissions, including: the Joint Commission on the Search for Missing Persons and Mortal Remains working under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC); the Government Commission for Detained and Missing Persons; and the State Commission for the United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR).
Mr. Simonovic, who holds a Ph.D. in law from the University of Zagreb (1990), was a member of the Faculty of Law from 1986 to 1993, during which time he was first an Assistant Professor, then an Associate Professor in the Department for the Theory of Law and State. Mr. Simonovic has also been a guest lecturer at universities in Graz, Austria, Krakow, Poland, and in the United States at the universities of Yale, Pittsburg, Montana and North Dakota. Prior to his 1986 appointment to the University of Zagreb, he worked at Zagreb's Social Research Institute.
Mr. Simonovic was born in Zagreb on 2 May 1959.
