STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETING ON CAPACITY-BUILDING FOR METROPOLITAN GOVERNANCE OF NAIROBI TO BE HELD 24-26 FEBRUARY
19970214 NEW YORK, 14 February (DDSMS) -- A Strategic Planning Meeting on Capacity-Building for Metropolitan Governance of Nairobi, organized by the United Nations Department for Development Support and Management Services (DDSMS) in cooperation with the Kenyan Ministry of Local Government, the Nairobi City Council and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will be held in Nairobi from 24 to 26 February.Senior government officials and the mayors and senior staff of the major cities of Kenya, as well as representatives of major donors, the private sector, United Nations organizations and non-governmental organization will attend the meeting. Mayors and town clerks from the United Republic of Tanzania, Uganda, Eritrea and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government will also be invited to participate as observers.
The meeting will review and finalize the Sector Review Report prepared by DDSMS, identify priorities and agree upon strategies, incorporating the views and consensus of all relevant interested parties, for the enhancement of the capacity for the metropolitan governance of Nairobi. A technical assistance programme/action plan will be formulated to facilitate the short-, medium- and long-term implementation framework for capacity-building for the metropolitan governance of Nairobi.
It is expected that the meeting and the technical assistance programme/action plan might lead Nairobi to become a model metro-centre for Africa in promoting private foreign and domestic investments and in fostering the transfer of technology and employment generation. Economic growth could could thus be encouraged and urban poverty alleviated through innovative policies, programmes and projects for sustainable urban development.
