DAG HAMMARSKJOLD LIBRARY ANNOUNCES NEW AND EXPANDED TRAINING PROGRAMME WITH EMPHASIS ON ELECTRONIC INFORMATION RESOURCES

19970205 The Dag Hammarskjold Library, of the Department of Public Information (DPI), has just announced its 1997 Spring Training Programme. The revised and expanded programme of training seminars and workshops has a strong emphasis on electronic information resources, including the Internet, and is open to delegates and staff of permanent missions and the Secretariat.

The courses, many of which are being offered on an ongoing basis, include both basic and subject-focused Internet training, as for instance CyberSeek: a basic course in Internet information retrieval. Also available is a series on "electronic news gathering", with sessions focusing on different regions of the world. Participants are taught the best sources and most effective search strategies for independent and/or librarian-assisted retrieval of current and relevant data.

The programme also includes the following courses: Basics of United Nations Documentation; Organizing and Managing a United Nations Documentation Collection; and Using the Indexes to Proceedings. The latter is designed for those whose work focuses on the Security Council and the General Assembly. The structure and organization of the Indexes to Proceedings will be explained; participants will be shown how these vital tools can be used to conduct research on the work of United Nations main bodies, including tracking down co-sponsors of draft resolutions, citations to speeches and voting patterns. A course on the optical disk system (ODS) is also being offered, which demonstrates the capabilities of the system and discusses ways to connect to it.

An addition to the 1997 programme is a weekly, lunch-time introduction to the electronic products and services available in the General Reference Reading Room of the Dag Hammarskjold Library, with ample time allowed for independent practice.

To request a copy of the complete Spring Training Programme contact the Dag Hammarskjold Library by phone (963-6561), e-mail (nadresc@un.org) or fax (963-8861). Copies are also available in Room L-170B.
