NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SAN MARINO PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19970117 Biographical Note

Gian Nicola Filippi Balestra, the new Permanent Representative of San Marino to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary- General Kofi Annan.

Prior to his current appointment, from 1992 to 1996, Mr. Balestra was Permanent Representative of San Marino to the Council of Europe, in Strasbourg, France. From 1989 to 1996 he also served as San Marino's Ambassador to Belgium as well as Head of the Mission of San Marino to the European Communities in Brussels.

From 1987 to 1989, Mr. Balestra was San Marino's Permanent Observer to the United Nations.

Mr. Balestra began his career as a Programme Officer in the Junior Professional Officers Programme of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Addis Ababa (1984-1985).

Born on 10 December 1954 in San Marino, Mr. Balestra holds a degree in law from the Universita' degli Studi di Roma (1980) and a Master's degree in International Law from New York University (1983). He also received a diploma in International Law from The Hague Academy of International Law (1983). He is single.
