Biographical Note                              

     NGONI FRANCIS SENGWE OF ZIMBABWE ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF FIFTH COMMITTEE

Ngoni Francis Sengwe, who was today elected Chairman of the Fifth Committee (Administrative and Budgetary), has served as Deputy Permanent Representative of Zimbabwe to the United Nations since February 1992.

Since then, he has represented his country in various committees and working groups of the General Assembly, serving as the alternate head of delegation during the fiftieth session.  He was Chargé d'affaires ad interim between February 1995 and April 1996.  In 1992, he served as Zimbabwe's Deputy Head of Delegation to the Security Council.

Prior to his current assignment, Mr. Sengwe was the Under-Secretary for Commonwealth Affairs of Zimbabwe's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  In that capacity, he was in charge of arrangements for the twenty-eighth Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Harare in 1991.  He served as Counsellor at his country's Embassy to the then German Democratic Republic from 1983 to 1989, and as Chargé d'affaires ad interim between May 1988 and February 1989. 

Mr. Sengwe has served in various capacities in his country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which he joined in 1981, including as Senior Administrative Officer, Assistant Secretary and Under-Secretary. 

Mr. Sengwe holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Columbia International University in South Carolina; a Master of Arts degree in Communications (Journalism) from Wheaton College Graduate School, Chicago; and a Master of Arts degree in International Relations from Boston University.

Born on 14 August 1949, he is married and has three children.
