ARJAN HAMBURGER OF NETHERLANDS ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF SECOND COMMITTEE


Arjan Hamburger, who was elected today as Chairman of the Second Committee (Economic and Financial), has been a minister in charge of economic affairs at the Permanent Mission of the Netherlands to the United Nations since 1992.  In 1994, Mr. Hamburger was a vice-chairman of the Second Committee.


In 1991. Mr. Hamburger was seconded by his Government to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) where he served in the "Club du Sahel", in Paris, which is a section within the OECD that deals with Africa.


From 1988 to 1991, he was head of the Development Programme of the Netherlands in Mali and Chargé d'affaires.


Mr. Hamburger served in several capacities with his country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  From 1982 to 1987, he was head of the Environment and Energy Bureau, Development Cooperation Department; from 1978 to 1982, he served in the Economic Bureau, International Organizations Department; and from 1973 to 1978, he was in the European Department.


Mr. Hamburger, who was born on 22 August 1948 in Utrecht, has a law degree from the University of Utrecht.  He is married and has one child.
