ALYAKSANDR SYCHOU OF BELARUS ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF FIRST COMMITTEE
Alyaksandr Sychou, the Permanent Representative of Belarus to the United Nations, was elected today Chairman of the First Committee (Disarmament and International Security).
Prior to his current appointment in 1994, Mr. Sychou had been Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belarus since September 1992. Prior to that, from 1991, he was Head of the Foreign Economic Relations Department of the Foreign Ministry.
Mr. Sychou entered the diplomatic service in 1979, serving in various capacities in the Foreign Ministry of Belarus. From 1984 to 1990, Mr. Sychou worked at his country's Permanent Mission to the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva.
During his diplomatic service, Mr. Sychou represented his country at several meetings of the General Assembly, the Economic and Social Council, the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Commission on Disarmament, and the 1995 Review and Extension Conference of the Non-Proliferation Treaty. From 1988 to 1990, he was a member of the Bureau and also Chairman of the Session Committee of the ECE.
Mr. Sychou is a graduate of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Department of Foreign Economic Relations. Born on 19 September 1951 in Homel, Belarus, he is married and has two children.
