SECRETARY-GENERAL WARMLY CONGRATULATES KOFI ANNAN ON RECEIVING SECURITY COUNCIL RECOMMENDATION

19961213 The following was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General warmly congratulates Kofi Annan of Ghana on receiving the recommendation of the Security Council to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. The Secretary-General is pleased that the decision was unanimous and is especially gratified that Africa has been able to maintain the office of Secretary-General for a second five-year term, the objective which the Secretary-General has sought throughout these recent months. The Secretary-General has worked closely with Mr. Annan through these past five years and wishes him every success. The Secretary- General expresses his deepest thanks for the strong support and encouragement given to him throughout the past five years by the Member States and peoples of the United Nations.
