ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT WELCOMES SECURITY COUNCIL'S RECOMMENDATION OF KOFI ANNAN TO BE NEXT SECRETARY-GENERAL
19961213 The following statement was issued this evening by General Assembly President Razali Ismail (Malaysia):I am extremely pleased with the timely decision by the Security Council to recommend to the General Assembly Mr. Kofi Annan as the seventh Secretary- General of the United Nations.
Mr. Annan is known to me and to many Permanent Representatives to the United Nations. Mr. Annan is the correct choice; his appointment augurs well for the joint efforts of governments and the Secretariat to reform the United Nations at this critical time. As President of the General Assembly, I promise to work closely with him in our common efforts.
To provide delegations with sufficient time to consult their capitals, the item on the appointment of the Secretary-General will be considered by the Assembly on Tuesday afternoon, 17 December. Consideration of the item will be done in a manner that will fully meet the responsibility of the Assembly to appoint the Secretary-General.
Permanent Representatives will meet with the incoming Secretary-General before they appoint him, as a symbolic act of the coming together of governments and the Secretariat to strengthen the United Nations.
