COMMITTEE ACCEPTS CREDENTIALS FROM 59 MEMBER STATES

19961212 The Credentials Committee this morning accepted the credentials of the representatives of 59 Member States to the fifty-first General Assembly, as listed in a Secretary-General's memorandum of 10 December 1996. The Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel, Hans Corell, presented the Secretary-General's memorandum, which stated that formal credentials, as required by rule 27 of the Assembly rules of procedure, had been submitted by 42 Member States, while informal communications had been received from 17 Member States. At its first meeting on 11 October, the Committee accepted the credentials of 123 Member States and deferred a decision on acceptance of the credentials from Afghanistan. The Committee today again deferred action on Afghanistan. The Committee this morning also approved a draft resolution by which the General Assembly would approve the Committee's second report. Credentials Approved Credentials issued by the head of State or government or by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, as provided for in rule 27 of the rules of procedure of the General Assembly, were approved today for the following 42 Member States in respect of their representatives to the fifty-first session of the General Assembly: Argentina, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Belize, Benin, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, France, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Honduras, Hungary, India, Iraq, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Malawi, Mauritius, Nigeria, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Republic of Moldova, Samoa, San Marino, Seychelles, Swaziland, Togo, Turkey, United Republic of Tanzania, Vanuatu, Zaire and the United States. Also approved were the credentials submitted to the Secretary-General by means of a facsimile communication from the head of State or government or the Minister for Foreign Affairs, or by means of a letter or note verbale from the Permanent Mission concerned of the following 17 Member States: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Chad, Congo, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Estonia, Gambia, Guatemala, Haiti, Italy, Madagascar, Marshall Islands, Palau, Rwanda, Saint Lucia and Sao Tome and Principe. These credentials were approved with the understanding that formal credentials would be submitted to the Secretary- General as soon as possible.
