NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF QATAR PRESENTS CREDENTIALS

19961211 Biographical Note

Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the new Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, presented his credentials today to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Khalifa served as Qatar's Ambassador to Italy, from 1994 to 1996, and as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, from 1991 to 1993.

Mr. Khalifa began his career in 1977 as an Information Attaché at Qatar's Embassy in Washington, D.C., where he later served as First Secretary (1981-1986) and then Counsellor (1988-1990). He also served as Counsellor at Qatar's Embassy in Paris from 1986 to 1987.

At the United Nations, Mr. Khalifa has served as a Second Secretary with Qatar's Permanent Mission in New York (1978-1981) and participated in several sessions of the General Assembly (1978, 1979, 1981). He also participated in the 1979 United Nations Conference on Science and Technology in Vienna and the 1980 World Conference of the United Nations Decade for Women in Copenhagen, as well as other economic and cultural meetings. He was granted the honour, "Cavallere di Gran Croce" in the order of the Republic by the President of Italy.

Mr. Khalifa received a Masters degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins University in 1982. Born in Qatar in 1952, Mr. Khalifa is single.
