CHAIRMAN OF HOST COUNTRY COMMITTEE'S WORKING GROUP DESCRIBES RESULTS OF HEALTH-CARE QUESTIONNAIRE

19961120 The following statement was issued today by the Chairman of the Committee on Relations with the Host Country's working group on indebtedness:

The results of the health-care questionnaire were discussed by the working group on indebtedness at its meeting on 18 October 1996.

It seems clear that there is a substantial interest among members of the United Nations diplomatic corps in both group health insurance and group dental insurance.

Fifty-seven missions replied to the health-care questionnaire circulated by the Committee on Relations with the Host Country. The 57 missions which replied indicated that a total of 1,465 individuals affiliated with them might be prepared to participate in a group health insurance plan, were a plan or plans to be devised which would respond to the needs of the diplomatic community. Considering that the diplomatic community in New York is comprised of as many as 5,000 individuals, the actual number of potential participants is substantially higher.

Most responses indicated that missions would be willing to pay premiums of as much as $100 per person per month or $200 per family per month, depending on the type of health coverage provided. The responses also indicated that most of the missions would be prepared to pay the premium on behalf of their employees, although some missions would expect their employees to pay for coverage directly.

The responses further indicate that many missions feel that the cost of existing coverage for small groups of employees is very high, and a group plan covering the diplomatic corps would likely produce cost savings, better service, and a wider choice of medical professionals and specialists.
