NEW PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE OF SYRIA PRESENTS CREDENTIALS
19961029 Biographical NoteMikhail Wehbe, the new Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations, today presented his credentials to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali.
Before his new appointment, Mr. Wehbe was his country's Chief of the Private Offices Department at the Minister of Foreign Affairs (1988-1996). During the same period, he also served at the Ministry as a member of the Consultative Council for Administrative and Management Affairs.
At the Syrian Embassy in Bulgaria, Mr. Wehbe served as Counsellor and Minister Counsellor (1982-1988). From 1979 to 1982, he was Syria's Chief of the Cabinet of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. From 1974 to 1979, Mr. Wehbe served as Second and First Secretary at the Syrian Embassy in London. Prior to that appointment, he served as Third Secretary of the Syrian Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (1969-1971).
Mr. Wehbe has represented Syria at four sessions of the General Assembly from 1992 to 1995. He also participated in Summit Conferences of the Non- Aligned Movement held in Indonesia and in Colombia.
Mr. Wehbe holds a Ph.D. in internal law from Sofia University in Bulgaria (1987) and a Bachelor of Arts in political science and public administration from the University of Lebanon (1967).
Born in Damascus on 27 February 1942, Mr. Wehbe is married and has two children.
