SECRETARY-GENERAL PAYS TRIBUTE TO LIFE AND PUBLIC SERVICE OF LORD GLADWYN, EARLY UNITED KINGDOM PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO UNITED NATIONS

19961025 Diplomat was Also First Acting Secretary-General of World Organization, Described as 'Great Man...of Extraordinary Achievements'

This is the text of a statement today by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Lord Gladwyn of Bramfield.

Lord Gladwyn devoted his life to public service at home and abroad. He was a man of great vision and commitment, who dedicated himself to promoting the United Nations ideals of peace and international understanding. As the first Acting Secretary-General of the United Nations and later as United Kingdom Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1950-54, Lord Gladwyn made a crucial contribution to the work of the world organization.

It is particularly poignant that Lord Gladwyn should pass away on United Nations Day. At this time of great sorrow, I would like to express my profound regret at the passing of a great man, and my most sincere admiration for his extraordinary achievements.
