NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS WORLD FOOD DAY OBSERVANCE IN NEW YORK ON 25 OCTOBER

World Food Day will be observed at Headquarters on Friday, 25 October, at a meeting with the theme "Fighting Hunger and Malnutrition", beginning at 11:30 a.m. in the Trusteeship Council Chamber.

Rizali Ismail, President of the fifty-first session of the General Assembly, and Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali will address the gathering. Among other speakers will be Jean-Marie Kacou Gervais, President of the Economic and Social Council, and Jacques Diouf, Director-General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The keynote address will be delivered by Ivan L. Head, Professor of Law and Chair in South-North Studies at the University of British Columbia and former President of the International Development Research Centre of Canada.

World Food Day is traditionally observed in locations around the world on 16 October, the anniversary of the founding of the FAO in Quebec, Canada. This year's New York observance was planned as part of the preparations for the World Food Summit, to be held in Rome, 13-17 November.
