NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS UNITED NATIONS DAY TO BE OBSERVED AT HEADQUARTERS ON 24 OCTOBER

19961022 The President of the General Assembly Razali Ismail (Malaysia) has called for an observance of United Nations Day, to take place in the General Assembly Hall on Thursday, 24 October, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Organized by the Department of Public Information with the assistance of the Office of Conference and Support Services, the programme will feature a video conference with links to Buenos Aires, Copenhagen, Johannesburg, Kuala Lumpur, London, Sydney and Vienna. Children from around the world, both at the remote locations and in the General Assembly Hall, will read messages conveying their appreciation of the United Nations and their hopes for the future. Several students from the United Nations International School will be among those participating in the event.

Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali and the President of the Assembly will address the gathering. Samir Sanbar, Assistant Secretary- General for Public Information, will moderate. Representatives of delegations, non-governmental organizations, media and staff are invited to attend.

United States recording artist Richie Havens will also take part in the observance with a reading of the Preamble to the Charter of the United Nations and the performance of a song.
