SECRETARY-GENERAL EXPRESSES GREAT SADNESS OVER TRAGEDY AT MATIAS FLORES STADIUM IN GUATEMALA

19961017 The following was issued today by the Spokesman for Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali:

The Secretary-General has learned with great sadness of the tragedy which occurred yesterday at the Matias Flores National Stadium in Guatemala City. On behalf of the United Nations, he would like to express his deepest condolences to the families of those who died and his hopes that those injured will have a speedy recovery.

As a partner in Guatemala's efforts towards peace and reconciliation, the United Nations stands ready to provide to the Guatemalan authorities whatever support may be required at this time of need.
