SECRETARY-GENERAL MEETS WITH PRESIDENT CHIRAC OF FRANCE

19961016 PARIS, 16 October -- Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali met in Paris this morning with President Jacques Chirac.

The meeting which lasted over one hour, dealt with developments in the Middle East, as well as difficulties facing the implementation of Security Council resolution 986 (1995) on Iraq. A number of African problems were also discussed during the meeting, in particular the situation in the Kivu region of Zaire, and developments in Burundi, Angola and Rwanda.

The Secretary-General left Paris this afternoon for Hamburg, Germany, where he will be attending the swearing-in of the judges of the Law of the Sea Tribunal and laying the foundation stone of the Tribunal's future headquarters. He will also confer with Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel and deliver the keynote speech at the "Malente" Symposium in Lubeck.
