UNEP INDUSTRY AND ENVIRONMENT CENTRE GOES ON LINE

19961016 PARIS, 15 October (UNEP) -- The Paris-based United Nations Environment Programme Industry and Environment Centre (UNEP-IE) has opened a new Internet presence on the World Wide Web to provide governments, industry, non-governmental organizations and other stakeholders with information about UNEP's initiatives in sustainable production and consumption. The new home page is located at http://www.unepie.org.

That site is part of a continuing initiative by UNEP-IE to encourage and support the adoption of environmentally sound technologies and environmental management methods through worldwide information exchange.

The home page includes information on items such as the following: mission, activities and publications of UNEP-IE; cleaner production, including an on-line case-study database; awareness and preparedness for emergencies at the local level; tourism and the environment; environmental technology assessment; and industrial pollution management.

As the site is an integral part of the UNEP system in the World Wide Web, it also contains links to the home pages of UNEP headquarters (http://www.unep.org) and other UNEP sites around the world.

The new home page is an extension of the ongoing information exchange activities of UNEP-IE, which have historically centred around the communication media accessible to developing countries: hard copy publications and diskette databases. Given the recent rapid expansion of Internet accessibility throughout the world, however, many industries and governments in developing countries now prefer the World Wide Web and electronic mail for communication. In accordance with the UNEP-wide initiative to make environmental information more readily available to a greater number of stakeholders through the Web, UNEP-IE is meeting that need.
