FOREIGN MINISTERS OF VENEZUELA AND GUYANA, MEETING AT HEADQUARTERS, REVIEW CONTROVERSY BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES

19961004 The following statement, attributable to the Permanent Missions of Guyana and Venezuela, is being issued by the United Nations at the request of the two Governments:

The Foreign Ministers of Venezuela, Miguel Angel Burelli Rivas, and Guyana, Clement Rohee, met today at Headquarters with senior United Nations officials to review the state of discussions on the controversy between the two countries. United Nations officials present at the meeting were Sir Alister McIntyre, Personal Representative of the Secretary-General, Alvaro de Soto, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, and Johan Nordenfelt, Director, Americas Division. The Ministers were accompanied by Ralph Ramkarran and Carlos Ayala Corao, Facilitators of Guyana and Venezuela respectively, Samuel Insanally and Ramon Escovar Salom, respectively Guyana's and Venezuela's Permanent Representatives to the United Nations, and Ambassador Edmundo Gonzalez, Director of Political Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela.

In reviewing the situation, the Ministers noted that relations between the two countries were good and were improving in a number of areas. They noted also that those discussions taking place under the aegis of the Secretary-General of the United Nations were being conducted in a cordial and positive atmosphere.

The Ministers agreed that, in the period ahead, there should be more frequent meetings between the Facilitators from their countries and between them and the Secretary-General's Personal Representative. They agreed to keep the progress of the discussions under regular review, and to meet again to assess the situation at an appropriate time in the future.
