NOTE TO CORRESPONDENTS SECRETARY-GENERAL TO PRESENT HIS REVIEW OF PROGRESS ACHIEVED

19960927 ON IMPLEMENTING GOALS SET AT 1990 WORLD SUMMIT FOR CHILDREN

At a special commemorative meeting to be held at Headquarters on Monday, 30 September to observe the sixth anniversary of the World Summit for Children, Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali will present his review of progress made for children since the Summit. The meeting will take place in the Trusteeship Council Chamber at 9 a.m.

The President of the General Assembly, Razali Ismail (Malaysia), will preside over the meeting. Among those scheduled to participate in the event are the Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Carol Bellamy, and representatives at the ministerial level of the six countries which initiated the Summit: Canada, Egypt, Mali, Mexico, Pakistan and Sweden.

At the World Summit for Children held in New York in 1990, representatives of 159 countries pledged to reduce child and maternal mortality and give every child access to basic education, clean water and proper sanitation by the year 2000. They also pledged to ensure tangible progress on a set of intermediate goals to be reached by 1995. The Secretary-General's review finds that dramatic progress has been made on most of those goals in most countries, but expresses concern at the lack of progress on malnutrition and maternal mortality.

Following the meeting, Ms. Bellamy and Dr. Juan Ramón de la Fuente, Minister for Health of Mexico, will comment on the findings of the Secretary-General's review at a press conference in room 226 at 10:30 a.m.
